A warm welcome by our Icelandic hosts
Our expedition offers us an exploration of the spectacular landscape in this unique country. We stay in one of the most interesting parts of Iceland, on the south-east side. We are accommodated in a Christian centre and we will receive a warm welcome from our hosts. Breakfast, packed lunch and a hot evening meal are all included.
An Icelandic coach takes us on our optional package of five excursions, as detailed below, to experience the breathtaking scenery unique to Iceland.
The vibrant capital city of Reykjavik
We will spend a day exploring the capital city, built on the shores of the Faxa Bay. There are stunning views over the city and beyond to Mount Esja. The local shops are great to browse around and it is worth taking a walk along the quayside. A journey across lunar-like lava fields takes us to the Blue Lagoon, where we can experience a dip in the thermal pools.
Fording glacial rivers to a spectacular valley
The journey to the colourful Thorsmork Valley will be one of extraordinary beauty. We cross un-bridged glacial rivers as we make our way below the precipitous slopes of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. The afternoon is spent exploring this beautiful National Park; a colourful oasis, which nestles between three mighty glaciers, complete with the intriguing glacial lagoon.
Waterfalls and lava fields of the south coast
Glaciers, lava fields and black volcanic sands are all features of the varied landscape of South Iceland. We travel to Skogar to gaze upon the picturesque and unforgettable waterfall as it cascades over 60m of sheer cliffs. Just outside Vik there is an impressive arch that has been cut into the rock by the sea and is now large enough for boats to pass through. It is also sometimes possible to see puffins here.
Black lavafields and colourful valleys at Landmannalaugar
The Landmannalaugar area is considered to be the most colourful and unique place in Iceland. We have the opportunity to relax in a natural hot pool before taking a walk into the green, orange and pink-coloured valleys that surround the contrasting frozen black lava fields. En-route we view the mighty Hekla Volcano.
Iceland’s famous hot geyser and the golden falls
No trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the site of its famous geyser, Strokkur, which emits fountains of hot water, up to 20 metres in height. We move on to view Gullfoss, the finest of Iceland’s many waterfalls. Nicknamed “the golden falls” because of the rainbows that appear when the sun shines, the falls provide a spectacular sight amidst the barren Thjorsa Valley.
Jeep safari & flights to the fabulous Westmann Islands
In addition to the excursion package, there are other exciting options available including whale watching, horse riding, a flight over the fabulous Westmann Islands, a jeep safari around the Myrdalsjokull glacier, and Skaftafell (Jokulsarlon icebergs). |
