Come with us on an adventure. Oak Hall, in conjunction with Scripture Union, organise a ‘Taste of Mission’ expedition to Peru. This takes us from the bustling cities to the remote rainforests of the Amazon jungle, visiting a range of projects run by Scripture Union to help former street boys, with opportunities to help in practical ways.
An amazing overview of Peru
More than a quarter of Peru’s 28 million inhabitants live in the capital city of Lima. We spend a day taking in the fascinating sights and sounds of the city with its Spanish-style colonial architecture, colourful native-Indian markets, busy streets and friendly people.
Crossing over the mighty Andes Mountains to Kimo
The expedition takes us high up into the Andes Mountains, where we pass through a jagged and rugged landscape to the tropical rainforest of the Amazon Basin, which spreads out below us like a thick green carpet. An exciting end to the journey is a cage-cable river crossing pulled along by hand. Our time in Kimo is put to good use as we help Scripture Union in practical ways, such as work on the boys’ home at this developing campsite.
Beautiful Kawai beside the Pacific Ocean
We also spend some time at beautiful Kawai, another SU campsite and home for street boys, located on the coast of the mighty Pacific Ocean. Here we are able to help with ongoing maintenance work and construction of new facilities, as well as sharing friendship with the former street boys.
Providing water in the desert
South of Lima, the city of Ica is located in the desert. Approximately 300,000 people live here and water is in short supply. We have an opportunity to help by taking a truck full of water to a small community at the base of the mountains. At Kusi, we visit an SU project situated below Mt Huascaran, the highest peak in the Peruvian Andes.
Getting to know the real Peru
Throughout our time in Peru we will be accompanied by Scripture Union staff, who have an intimate knowledge of the country and culture. This expedition is specially designed for those who have a sense of adventure and are looking for a real insight into mission work in the third-world. Come prepared to lend a hand with the building projects and be used by God to touch the lives of children the world has forgotten. |
