A safari adventure in Africa ... Namibia is a land of beautiful contrasts. From the beaches on the coast, ideal for surfing, to the wildlife in some of the world’s greatest game parks. From the striking, reddish sand dunes to the laid-back city of Windhoek, there is a photographic opportunity at every turn!
Amazing culture and natural landscapes Our tour begins in the capital Windhoek, an intriguing mix of European and African cultures, surrounded by rolling hills. From here we head out to Sesriem to view the amazing sand dunes, which are the tallest in the world, rising as high as 300m.
Opportunities for action-packed adventures Swakopmund is an attractive town with ornately decorated buildings in the Old Town. Thriving vegetation on the seafront contrasting with the surrounding countryside. Outside the town there are a wide range of optional activities – a section of the dunes have been reserved for amazing activities such as sand boarding and skiing, quad biking and camel rides. Back at the shoreline, there are opportunities for surfing, excursions by boat to see dolphins and seals, or just relaxing in the sunshine.
Parks that are rich with wildlife On our way to Etosha we visit a Cheetah conservation park, protecting animals that would normally be hunted. Etosha itself is an amazing national park, with an abundance of wildlife. It was formed by the drying of a lake, which would have been the third largest in the world if it remained today. Today it is home to many different types of animal, including lion, giraffe, rhino, elephant and different types of buck, which can all be seen on our Game Drive. It may also be possible to see leopard and cheetah, as well as other birds and animals.
The best service and experience We are pleased to enjoy again the services of ACTS (African Christian Tours and Safaris), an experienced and professional organisation. They use a fully equipped overland safari truck and provide us with all our meals and drinks.
Camping in a beautiful environment The tents we will be using are heavy-duty, high quality two-man dome tents, with 5cm mattresses on the floor. The campsites have flush toilets and hot showers. Staring up at the sky at night is an amazing experience, with an incredible number of stars being visible to the naked eye. You will need to be the outdoor type who enjoys the vast expanse of the bush and is always prepared for the unexpected. It is said that once you have African soil on your shoes you cannot shake it off – we are sure you will find this is true!
Below is the provisional itinerary for our expedition. Please note that it is intended as a guideline only and may vary as the tour progresses.
Day 1: Depart UK
Day 2: Arrive Windhoek
Arriving in Windhoek, we will be met by the ACTS’ team. We will immediately board the overland truck and drive to the rest camp. Once we’ve settled in, we will have a welcome and briefing.
Day 3 & 4: Sesriem
After breakfast we will drive to Sesriem, the closest town to Sossusvlei, home of the world's tallest dunes and the fascinating pans between them. Optional activities that you can enjoy while in Sesriem include a hike to Sesriem Canyon, ballooning and fixed-wing flights over the dunes.
Day 5 – 7: Swakopmund
Our destination today is Swakopmund, where the boom of the surf on the notorious Skeleton Coast is an everpresent reminder of the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Just outside Swakopmund, a section of towering Barcan Dunes have been set aside for recreational purposes – sand boarding and skiing, quad-biking, camel rides and offroad driving. Swakopmund also offers a host of other attractions, including excursions by boat to see dolphins and seals, shore-based angling (some of the best in Africa), surfing or just simply lazing on the beach. And, of course, the town is surrounded by the Namibian Naukluft Park, one of the most bewitching desert wilderness areas in Africa, for day trips. We will have plenty of time to enjoy the optional activities on offer.
Day 8: Cheetah Park
This is a farm turned Cheetah conservation park after a group of wild cheetah attacked the farm’s livestock in 1994. Rather than shoot the animals (as was the common practice among Namibian farmers) they decided to trap the animals, with the hope of relocating them to a game park. It turned out it was seemingly impossible to relocate the wild cheetah for various reasons. Releasing them back into the wild meant certain death for the cheetah. The owners then resolved to initiate a conservation programme for the cheetah on their farm. It has been successful thus far. The optional activity available is a cheetah tour.
Day 9 -11: Etosha
The journey today will take us to the Etosha National Park. Etosha, meaning "Great White Place", is dominated by a massive mineral pan. The pan is part of the Kalahari Basin, the floor of which was formed around 1000 million years ago. Temporary water in the Etosha Pan attracts thousands of wading birds including impressive flocks of flamingos. A San legend about the formation of the Etosha Pan tells of how a village was raided and everyone but the women slaughtered. One woman was so upset about the death of her family she cried until her tears formed a massive lake. When the lake dried up nothing was left apart from a huge white pan.
The game viewing in Etosha National Park is excellent and visitors can expect to see many buck species, elephant, giraffe, rhino and lions. If we are lucky we may see leopard and cheetah.
Day 12: Windhoek
This morning we will make the journey back to Windhoek.
Day 13: Depart Windhoek
Today we say our final goodbyes to the ACTS team and make our way to the airport.
Day 14: Arrive back in the UK |
