Glaciers, cities and lakes

New for this year, we are excited to offer an adventurous, active week in the Austrian mountains. We will be staying at the Hotel Taferne in Schladming, which we know well from other Oak Hall summer and winter holidays.   

Do you love breathtaking scenery and thrilling outdoor activities? Join us for an unforgettable week in the stunning Alpine region of Schladming, Austria. Experience canyoning through dramatic gorges, the exhilaration of river rafting and scaling Via Ferrata routes, plus the thrill of soaring down a zip wire.

All the activities are suitable for beginners and are led by local guides. Please bear in mind that a good general level of fitness is needed for the activities, as they involve walking, climbing, swimming, jumping into water and abseiling. The activity providers have a minimum age of 10 years old. 


 
 
 

Exciting adventures

On four of the days there will be an organised activity  rafting, canyoning, Via Ferrata and zip wires. The cost for these is included, as well as coach transport to reach the sites. Each activity will last between 2 - 4 hours. 

In the remaining free time, there will be plenty of other activities on offer in the beautiful natural scenery of mountains, lakes and waterfalls. If you enjoy walking, cycling, ice caves, or even go-kart trikes, you'll love exploring this area! 

Introducing Hotel Taferne

We stay at the three-star, family-owned Hotel Taferne in the village of Mandling, on the edge of Schladming. An ideal location for a week of the best mountain adventures!

A continental breakfast will be served each morning. After a day of exploring, we return home to Hotel Taferne where we will enjoy an appetising three-course meal served to us by the hotel staff.
 
 

A range of room options

The hotel is comfortable and all bedrooms are en-suite. We will use most of the rooms for two people, but some of the rooms can be used for three or four people if you prefer. Many of the beds are Austrian-style (one frame with separate mattresses and duvets). There are also a small number of single rooms. 

The hotel has standard rooms, as well as superior rooms at a supplement of £88 per person for the week. The superior rooms have been recently renovated and have walk-in showers. 

 

Amazing glacier views

As well as the active adventures, we will make our way to the stunning Dachstein glacier, with snow all year round and stunning views. Coach transport from the hotel and the cable car ride up the glacier are included. At the top there are various options available, payable locally, including the suspension bridge and ice palace or you can just enjoy the amazing views. 
 
 

Rafting and canyoning

Dive into the heart of Austria's natural beauty with two exhilarating water-based adventures. Experience the rush of river rafting as you navigate the rapids, guided by experts who ensure both safety and fun. Then, take on the challenge of canyoning—exploring dramatic gorges through a mix of scrambling, climbing, abseiling, and plunging into pristine pools. These activities offer an unforgettable way to connect with Austria’s wild and breath-taking landscapes, whether you're a beginner or an experienced thrill-seeker.

Via ferrata and zip wire

For those who enjoy stunning views, Austria's via ferrata routes and zip wires deliver unbeatable experiences. Scale rocky cliffs using secure cables, rungs, and ladders on guided via ferrata climbs, where panoramic Alpine vistas reward your efforts. Then, take to the skies on a high-speed zip wire, soaring above lush forests and rivers for an adventure with a breath-taking views. Both activities are perfect for combining excitement with the beauty of the great outdoors.
 
 

The excellent Summer card

Our accommodation provides the excellent Summer Card, granting free or discounted access to over 100 attractions in the Schladming area. Enjoy complimentary rides on cable cars, entrance to parks and pools, plus free local bus transport. Whether you're exploring miles of scenic hiking and cycling trails, swimming in crystal-clear lakes, or visiting mountain huts, the Summer Card opens up endless opportunities for fresh-air fun. For something unique, try racing down the mountain on three-wheeled go-kart trikes — there's something for everyone!
