The beauty of springtime in the Swiss Alps

April is a wonderful time to appreciate the magnificence of God's creation. We stay in the comfortable Hotel Staubbach and enjoy the beauty of springtime in the Swiss Alps.

There is a wonderful variety of walks and activities in the local area. Each day our Oak Hall team will suggest options, and you can head off in smaller groups to see whatever interests you most. With so much to choose from, we keep the programme flexible, so you are free to plan your own days. Each evening the leader will share their plans for the following day, in case you would like to join them.

Spring crocuses and alpine gentians

The alpine flowers burst into life as the snows recede, revealing spring crocuses and the deep blue gentians, with the famous edelweiss to follow later in the year. The flower trail has 150 different species of mountain flowers.

Beneath the Jungfrau and Eiger

Lauterbrunnen lies below the mighty Jungfrau and Eiger. A striking feature of this cosy alpine village is the 300-metre Staubbach waterfall, and the valley as a whole has 72 waterfalls — the village's name means 'many springs'. Inside a 16th-century mill there is a fascinating museum of village life.

The heights of the Jungfraujoch by mountain railway

Should you choose to take the mountain railway and cable cars, you are whisked up into the high mountains. At 3,454 metres, the Jungfraujoch is the ultimate ride, climbing to the top station with sweeping views of the Aletsch Glacier and the valley below.

Mountain paths and sunny cafés

There is so much to see and experience. The Panoramaweg is a dream of a walk, following mountain tracks past flower meadows, villages and farms. There is plenty of time to relax with a coffee or hot chocolate at a sunny outdoor café.

Riverside walks and clifftop views

The Lütschine Promenade follows the river along the valley floor, while car-free Wengen sits quietly on the slopes above. The cable car climbs to Birg, where a 200-metre wire-mesh walkway runs along the cliff face with a sheer drop below, and on up to the summit of the Schilthorn, with its Skyline viewing platform and the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant. Gimmelwald, reached only by cable car, overlooks the valley, and the chalets of Stechelberg and Isenfluh make for lovely photographs. The funicular to Allmendhubel opens onto high alpine meadows.

Cruising on the lake from Interlaken

Interlaken, the nearest town, is easily reached and well worth exploring for its shops and lakeside cafés. From here the lake steamers offer cruises on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

Thundering waterfalls inside the mountain

The Trümmelbach Falls are an extraordinary sight: 10 glacier-fed waterfalls hidden inside the mountain. A walkway takes you alongside the thundering water as it crashes down from the glaciers and melting snow above.
