On subsequent days, a local coach that is equipped for the terrain will take us on five excursions, as detailed below, to experience the breath-taking scenery of Iceland.
The country's famous geyser, Strokkur, emits fountains of hot water up to 20 metres in height. Gullfoss, arguably the finest of Iceland’s many waterfalls is nicknamed “the golden falls” because of the rainbows that appear when the sun shines. The falls provide a spectacular sight amidst the barren Thjorsa Valley.
The unique Landmannalaugar area is one of the most striking locations in Iceland. We have the opportunity to relax in a natural hot pool before taking a walk into the green, orange and pink-coloured valleys that surround the contrasting frozen black lava fields. En-route we view the mighty Hekla Volcano.
We stay in one of the most interesting parts of Iceland, on the south-west side. Accommodated in a centre that is hosted by a Christian team, we always receive a warm welcome. Breakfast, packed lunch and a hot evening meal are all included.
We will spend a day exploring the capital city of Reykjavik, built on the shores of the Faxa Bay. There are stunning views over the city and beyond to Mount Esja. We can browse the interesting local shops and take a walk along the quayside. There may also be the option of whale watching to see these amazing animals in their natural habitat.
Glaciers, waterfalls and lava fields are all features of the varied landscape of South Iceland. We travel to Skogar to gaze upon a picturesque and unforgettable waterfall as it cascades over 60m of sheer cliffs. Just outside Vik there is an impressive arch that has been cut into the rock by the sea and is now large enough for boats to pass through. It is also sometimes possible to see puffins here.
